Building a Workplace Mental Health Policy from Scratch

About This Workshop

A mental health policy is not a checklist. Organizations that treat it that way end up with a PDF no one reads and a culture that contradicts every word of it. Building one that actually functions requires understanding what it needs to cover, who it involves, and how it connects to existing HR and safety infrastructure.

What you build during this course

By the end of the program, you will have a working first draft of a mental health policy tailored to your organization. The course guides you through each component: purpose statement, scope, roles and responsibilities, confidentiality provisions, accommodation procedures, and crisis protocols.

You will also learn how to conduct an internal needs assessment before writing the policy, which is the step most organizations skip. Without it, you are writing policy for an imaginary workforce rather than the actual one you have.

Legal and standards context

The course references the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (CSA Z1003) and relevant provincial human rights and occupational health legislation. You are not expected to be a lawyer, but you need to understand what obligations already exist.

Dmitri Voloshyn, Director of People and Culture - We had fragments of policy scattered across different documents. This course helped me consolidate them into something coherent and legally grounded.

Live workshops are included to review drafts with an instructor and peers from other organizations.
